Foodborne illness refers to all kind of illnesses which are caused by consuming foods and drinks contaminated with parasites, pathogenic bacteria or viruses. Young children and babies are more liable to this kind of illness because their immune systems are not ready yet to face this infection. That’s why you, as a parent, have to pay attention while you prepare the baby food and infant formula for your child.

Baby food
First thing you should do for your child if you want to avoid foodborne illness is to wash your hands well, with soap and water, after: you touched pets, changed a diaper, used the toilet and every time you touch the baby’s food.

There are also other tips which can help you to feed your baby with safe food:

  •   Use a separate dish

Avoid feed your baby from jar and use a clean dish for your baby food. In this case, additional food can be put in the refrigerator and if your baby needs more food, serve it with a clean spoon. Throw away the remained food in the dish. Don’t store in refrigerator, more than three days, an opened baby food. Also, the spoon of your child is only his spoon, so don’t put it in your or anyone else’s mouth.

  • Sterilize

You can sterilize all dishes, bottles and feeding equipment in the dishwasher. Most have an extra hot water wash setting or option. You can read some dishwasher reviews to see which model has a hot water setting or an extra hot water rinse. Dishwasher reviews are free and you can find them on many websites. If you are looking for a cheaper way to sterilize the baby’s bottles, you can use the traditional method and submerse it in boiling water.

  • Inspect the packing of baby food

When you open a jar, the lid must “pop” and not be rusty and the glass shouldn’t be chipped. If something is not right you’d better throw it away.

At plastic pouches pay attention to leaking and swelling.

  • Pay attention to foods at room temperature

Don’t let opened bottles of liquids or pureed baby food out, more than two hours, at room temperature. Room temperature is favorable for bacteria to grow quickly.

Infant formula
It’s true that breast milk is the most nutritive food for your baby. But, in some cases the mother is unable to breastfeed and a good substitute of milk is baby formula food because it can give to your baby a proper nutrition.

  • Cow’s milk…why not?

If your child is under the age of one, you have to know that the cow’s milk is not good for him because it doesn’t have, like baby formula food, a correct balance of nutrients which helps your baby to develop normally and may causes to him anemia or kidney function.

Never give to your child raw milk and you must avoid to consume it too because it may contain dangerous microorganisms.

  •   How to properly prepare infant formula?

Firstly, boil the water for one minute, after reaching the boiling point. Then, let the water to reach body temperature. Now it’s time to mix the formula.

Don’t prepare more baby food formula than you will need. If you store improperly the remaining food, bacteria can grow quickly in prepared formula. It’s better to prepare small quantities of food.

Following this tips regarding baby food and infant formula, you can avoid to contaminate your baby with foodborne illnesses and you are now ready to proper prepare and storage them.
